Android 16 Beta 2 Icon Theme Bug: Wallpaper & Style Issues Frustrate Users

22-April-2024 (10 months ago)

Android 16 is currently in beta, and while bugs are expected, it’s frustrating when old issues resurface. A new bug in Android 16 Beta 2 is causing headaches for Pixel users, specifically related to icon theme customization.

What’s the Issue?

Users are unable to set color-themed icons from the “Wallpaper & Style” settings. This feature, a cornerstone of Android’s Material You design, allows users to apply accent colors extracted from their wallpaper to app icons. However, in Beta 2, the icon color presets are unresponsive to taps, making customization nearly impossible.

Workaround Available

Interestingly, the bug seems isolated to the “Wallpaper & Style” section. Users can still access icon theme settings via the “System Coloring” page, found in the three-dot menu. While this provides a temporary fix, it’s far from ideal for those accustomed to the streamlined customization process.

How Severe Is the Bug?

According to reports from Android Police, users need to tap the icon theme option up to 25 times for it to register. Even restarting the device doesn’t resolve the issue, leaving users reliant on Google to release a hotfix.

What’s Next?

As Android 16 is still in beta, bugs like this are part of the testing process. However, the reappearance of previously resolved issues is concerning. Google is expected to address the problem in an upcoming update, but for now, Pixel users will need to rely on the “System Coloring” workaround.

Stay tuned for updates as Google works to resolve this frustrating bug.
